St. Teresa - 108 and Going Great Guns….

The beginning of 1900 was not a very bright period as far as women empowerment was concerned. Women education was restricted mainly to upper class and influential families. The poor families could never even dream that there was something called education for their womenfolk.
When the situation was so hopeless and gloomy, the SMMI Sisters - Salesian Missionaries of Mary Immaculate (Estd 1885) took up the challenge of educating and empowering girls from very poor families, slums and orphanages. In the year 1914, in the thick of all obstacles and problems, the SMMI Sisters established a small institution in the heart of the city of Bangalore (Chamarajpet), solely for the purpose of educating and empowering women, particularly of poor, marginalized and neglected sections of society, named after Saint Thérèse of Lisieux / Saint Therese of the Child Jesus (1873-1897) – God’s Little Flower. The 108 years old St. Teresa’s Educational Institutions, Chamarajpet, Bangalore, have a glorious past, contemporary present and an immaculate future.

The St. Teresa Degree College for Women was established in the year 2014 with a noble intention of providing higher education to poor, marginalized and neglected women.  Today, hundreds of students belonging to various religious and linguistic groups pursue higher education in this College.

It is the special mission of the College to reach out to students from socially and economically disadvantaged sections of society, and to prepare them to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. In many ways the College provides a truly unique educational environment for the students.

The College offers students a wide range of opportunities to encourage and foster creativity and leadership skills through various extra and co-curricular programs, ranging from games to community service and service-learning. Educational parameters are enhanced through partnerships and collaborations with research institutions and other institutions of higher education, which help both faculty and students to expand their knowledge and skills through exposure to national and global perspectives.

At the same time, the College continually strives to increase sensitivity to social and environmental issues. The social awareness and outreach programs which are an integral part of the curriculum are oriented towards serving the community in a variety of ways by bringing education, as well as entrepreneurial skill-training to youth and women, so that they are equipped with the appropriate knowledge and skills to become self-sufficient. By integrating such experiential learning into the academic program, students develop a sense of social justice and responsibility and are encouraged to regard service to others as a way of life.
